Following on from the initial concept assembly we modelled a v-belt driven concept for the motored engine assembly – shown below:
The belt is in a very similar position to the gears in the initial concept, so it is well hidden behind the flywheel. The motor is again in a similar position to the initial concept, but now mounts on a hinging plate to allow adjustment of the belt tension – with a rose jointed threaded rod to allow for accurate control of the belt tension.
The other part of this concept that had to be considered was the mass of the flywheel. To try and minimise the inertia in the system as much as possible, we will remanufacture the flywheel out of aluminium (we will also make it slightly narrower to give a little more space for the belt drive).
